Charité – Campus Mitte

Campus Charité Mitte is situated in the heart of the city. This is where the Charité was established 300 years ago – originally for plague victims, and later as a hospice, hospital for the poor and teaching institution. It was not until 1927 that the Charité finally became a university teaching hospital. Campus Charité Mitte boasts outstanding expertise in neuroscience, ear/nose/throat medicine, immunology and infectious diseases. Orthopaedic specialists and neurosurgeons work closely together at the Spine Centre.

Advanced Medicine

In cooperation with the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), the Charité set up the Center for Stroke Research Berlin (CSB) in 2005. The CSB works on diagnostic and treatment concepts aimed at preventing complications. The goal is to reduce mortality and morbidity in patients who suffer a stroke. New ways to protect the brain are a particular focus of the CSB’s work.

The Department of Urology at the Charité is one of the few centres in Germany to already use the da Vinci system to remove the prostate. Using a robot, the surgeon can insert the instruments into the abdominal wall and guide them externally. The da Vinci method has major benefits for the patient, as minimal incisions and blood loss allow them to recover quickly after surgery.
