Campus Virchow-Klinikum is situated in Berlin’s Wedding district, where Virchow had a hospital built in the pavilion style one hundred years ago. Although most of the buildings were destroyed during the war, the beautiful grounds still surround the university hospital to this day, and are protected by a preservation order. The Charité and Rudolf-Virchow-Krankenhaus merged in 1997.

Gynaecology and paediatric medicine are areas in which Campus Virchow-Klinikum specializes. Another focus is on tumour medicine, which involves interdisciplinary cooperation between surgeons, internal medicine specialists, gynaecologists and radiation therapists. Cardiovascular medicine is the third area of focus at the campus.

Advanced Medicine

State-of-the-art technology in the field of oncology is available at the Charité’s CyberKnife Center. A tumour can be targeted with high-precision radiation using an image-guided robot. Even the slightest movement on the part of the patient is noticed and the radiation beam immediately corrected. The patient is completely pain-free throughout the treatment process and can leave the centre the same day.

New types of cancer treatment such as radioimmunotherapy, stem cell transplants, cellular immunotherapy and regional chemotherapy are used at the Medical Department, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Tumor Immunology. The department takes part in clinical studies and also runs its own national and international oncology and haematology studies.

Experts from all kinds of different areas work together on an interdisciplinary basis at the Charité’s nine Departments of Paediatric Medicine. Patients benefit from this network of specialist doctors and researchers, and receive the best-possible treatment in line with the latest scientific knowledge.
