Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC)

Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) is one of Europe’s leading heart centres. It treats patients of all age groups who are suffering from any cardiovascular condition – on the basis of cutting edge technology, intensive research, close interdisciplinary cooperation and the best possible patient care.
The DHZC specializes in bypass operations, aortic surgery and the treatment of valvular heart diseases and arrhythmia. Whenever possible, and whenever this is in the patient’s best interests, minimally-invasive procedures are used. The DHZC’s programmes for treating congenital heart defects, for heart and/or lung transplants and for artificial hearts are among the largest in Germany.

Advanced Medicine

Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) runs the world’s foremost programme of implantable ventricular assist devices, normally known as “artificial hearts”. They permanently take over the pump function of the heart in the event of untreatable cardiac insufficiency. This allows most patients to live a largely normal life.

Among other things, the DHZC plays a leading role in developing cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the field of cardiology. It is one of only a handful of institutions in Germany to be certified as a centre for training in this modern diagnostic method.

The DHZC also leads the field when it comes to the treatment of congenital heart defects. Many patients need highly-specialized lifelong care, which requires considerable experience and knowledge of the best treatment options. The DHZC was one of the first hospitals in Germany to be certified as a national centre for the treatment of adults with congenital heart defects.
